Dr. Appolinaire Etoundi is Senior Lecturer and Researcher in Mechatronics at the University of the West of England and Bristol Robotics Laboratory.

Appolinaire’s research is inspired by systems found in nature, an area of robotics known as biomimicry. It is highly interdisciplinary research requiring a range of STEM skills and interests.

Appolinaire's research has lead him to some fascinating opportunities, including working with members of the ParalympicsGB team, including Paralympic hopeful Tania Goddard and Rio Paralympic Triathlon gold medal winner Andy Lewis. This research could one day lead to the development of a nature-inspired prosthetic that gives the greatest range of motion with the least friction.

In this talk, Appolinaire will talk about where his design inspiration comes from, and how his research draws upon all kinds of science and engineering principles to bring measurable improvements to people's lives.

This will be followed by a short ABM for the ASE West of England region

Who: Unity Audio Sound Designers
Venue: Online Event
Fee: Sound designers will be paid £300 for attending both workshops
RAIN
We are seeking sound designers with experience of Unity audio development (including FMOD or Wwise) to take part in workshops on the 17th and 31st March.

We are interested in studying the effect of sound on people’s sense of presence in virtual environments, particularly simulated hazardous spaces. The workshops will involve designing sounds that convey information for a VR application where teleoperators control robots in a nuclear decommissioning environment.

The workshops will take place remotely and will involve periods of group discussion and independent work. At the end of each workshop, designers will submit sounds for us to use in subsequent research.

Apply Now: Please email a CV or equivalent along with links to portfolio examples to tom.mitchell@uwe.ac.uk by 3rd March 2021.

We encourage people from a diversity of backgrounds to apply.

The Fourth Industrial Revolution is transforming UK manufacturing and with it, productivity. We are supporting manufacturers towards a digital future through smart use of technology and data, we are hosting this workshop to improve the funding landscape for technology transfer and support for manufacturers by using this evidence to influence government and policymakers.

Many universities, catapults, research institutions, local enterprise partnerships (LEPs) and others are working with manufacturers to deliver support to help them transition to digital manufacturing. But the funding landscape is confusing and fragmented, which is leading to a 'lack of finance' to investment being one of the biggest barriers standing in the way of manufacturers adopting 4IR and a digital future. Getting this right is integral to boosting productivity and maintaining global competitiveness....

Connected and Collaborative – Assistive Robots to Empower and Support

When: 9th December 2019 (18:00 - 21:00)
Venue: Aerospace Bristol, Hayes Way, Bristol, BS34 5BZ
Cost: Free
UR
Designing assistive robots to empower and support older adults to live independently requires contextualised, up-to-date, accurate and relevant information. Integrating robots with smart home sensing solutions is a key step in providing dynamic contextual and social intelligence for personalised assistance. A modular and flexible system requires heterogeneous data fusion, combining information from multiple sources, including from the user themselves, incorporating the person’s individual behaviours, lifestyles and daily routines. In addition to a deep understanding of personal, cultural, socio-economic and clinical attributes, the underlying architecture also requires the capability to adapt to needs that are likely to change over time – often in a non-deterministic manner.

Prof Praminda Caleb-Solly (BRL) will discuss the challenges and approaches for working towards safe and robust assistive robotic solutions in noisy real-world environments.
