Code of Conduct on Applications of Robotics
BRL aspires to innovation for the good of humanity, but recognizes that “good” is subjective. When considering BRL engagement with research on robotics for defence, dual-use, or other contentious applications, the following four principles will be applied:
- Non-lethality: BRL will not support work whose purpose is to harm humans for any reason. This includes robotic weapons or their autonomous deployment.
- Individual autonomy: BRL respects the individual choices of its members and shall not commit or oblige them to any particular activity or engagement.
- Mutual respect: BRL encourages constructive, respectful debate on the wider implications of technology. BRL members will not be disadvantaged for their individual choices on this matter.
- Transparency: BRL requests that its members report on their research and engagements for monitoring by the BRL Board.
